From Murray’s 1903 “History of the Ninth Regiment CV”:
WILLIAMS, CAPT. MICHAEL A., born in County Waterford, Ireland; became a carriagesmith. He married Bridget E. McGowan. Their children were Teresa B., and William. Capt. Williams was an ardent friend of the Union, and early took steps to organize a company in New Haven for the projected Colt's regiment.
He enlisted into the Ninth, Aug. 16, 1861; and was mustered as first lieutenant Oct. 30, that year. He was promoted to be captain of Company A, April 10, 1862, and served until the expiration of the regiment's period of service. He was a good officer and highly esteemed. At one period, he was a representative from New Haven in the General Assembly of Connecticut.
