Dennis Deegan of Middletown, CT was born around 1846 to Martin and Bridget Deegan who immigrated to this country from Vicarstown, Ireland (County Laois). He enlisted in Company G of the Ninth as a 17 year old musician on May 1, 1863 and was quickly exposed to the war as the Ninth was engaged twice in a four day period shortly after his arrival in Louisiana. He re-enlisted on January 6, 1864 only to die of illness at the age of 18 on July 30, 1864 while the Ninth was on furlough in New Haven. He is buried in Old Saint Johns Cemetery, Middletown, CT.
