Andrew Ryan, the son of Julia and Charles Ryan, was born in Ireland about 1838/1840.
Andrew emigrated to the United States in the early 1860’s with his mother Julia and brother James. They are listed in the 1870 census in the Mount Carmel section of Hamden, Connecticut.
Andrew volunteered as a private in the Conn 9th on May 17, 1864 in New Haven, Connecticut. His first assignment was with CO F, 9th Infantry Regiment. He was transferred on October 12, 1864 to Co C, 9th Battalion Regiment. This unit participated in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. He mustered out of the service on August 3, 1865 in Hilton Head, South Carolina .
After his discharge from the service, Andrew returned to his family and home in Mount Carmel (Hamden,CT) and worked as a machinist in the Brass Shop.
Andrew became a citizen on March 23, 1866 in New Haven Superior Court.
Andrew died on July 3, 1870 in Hamden after being injured in an accident. He is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery on Whitney Ave. in Hamden. His grave is marked with a Veteran’s monument.
Pvt Ryan is a family ancestor of Kathlyn Ryan Kraffmiller.
