Sgt Bernard Caffrey enlisted as a private in Company D from Bridgeport on September 12, 1861. He was promoted to Cpl on October 21, 1862 and to Sgt on September 1, 1863. He re-enlisted on Jan 6, 1864 and was transferred to Co C, 9th Battalion C. V. on October 12, 1864.
According to descendant, Rose Mary Victor, “he was struck down with a saber sword on his left side of his head while stationed at New Orleans, LA. A fellow Union soldier (not in his unit) did this out of fear of a "Catholic Popist". Sad, but true. His fellow soldiers saved him and got him to the surgeon in time.” |
